ABOUT US

The Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1970 through the efforts of dedicated local business owners and residents who wanted to support and advocate for their small but rapidly growing community of fewer than six thousand residents. The discovery of oil at Prudhoe Bay on the North Slope of Alaska just two years earlier marked the beginning of a significant shift toward rapid development, reshaping this once-sleepy corner of Alaska. Today, the Chamber serves an area with a population of 33,000 and is part of the larger Municipality of Anchorage, which has an estimated population of just under 300,000. The community is easily accessible via a fully lit, six-lane highway connecting Eagle River to Anchorage.

The Chamber of Commerce is involved in various projects and annual signature events that connect, enhance, and promote the community. From its inception, the Chamber’s mission has been to foster a sustainable and vibrant economic and civic environment. The Chamber also operates a Visitor Center, offering brochures and information on local businesses, recreation, dining, hiking, and more for both visitors and residents. Whether you are new to the area or a long-time resident, we encourage you to stop by and see how we can help.

Why is the Greater Eagle River Area unique?

The Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber of Commerce holds a distinct position within the Municipality of Anchorage, setting itself apart through its dedicated focus on the Greater Eagle River community. The Chamber’s mission is to serve as a vital connection between the business sector and the community, fostering relationships and promoting collaboration to drive economic and community development.

Operating with a small team and limited financial resources, the Chamber achieves impactful results through strategic partnerships and effective collaboration. By prioritizing community enrichment, the Chamber invests in events and beautification projects that leave a lasting impression. While these efforts may not always yield immediate visibility, the continued support from members through annual dues and sponsorships allows the Chamber to extend its outreach and initiatives.

The Chamber’s advocacy for its members is demonstrated through:

  • Supporting Local Resolutions: Endorsing community-focused resolutions related to zoning, infrastructure, and beautification to shape policies that benefit local businesses and residents.

  • Engagement with Legislators: Building relationships and sharing business concerns through informal discussions with policymakers, fostering trust and aligning legislative actions with community needs.

  • Promoting a Positive Image: Utilizing social media, community events, and word-of-mouth to highlight member businesses and encourage local engagement.

  • Collaborative Community Projects: Partnering with local organizations on initiatives such as youth programs, job fairs, and neighborhood improvements to strengthen community bonds.

The Chugiak-Eagle River area, though part of Anchorage, maintains a unique “town” character defined by traditional values, hometown pride, and new energy from younger generations. This close-knit spirit is evident in local gathering places where residents of all ages share stories about the town’s history, recent changes, or memorable events. Many who grew up in the area return to raise families, continue family businesses, or launch new enterprises.

The Chamber’s Board of Directors and staff are committed to preserving the town’s character while supporting business growth and economic vitality. Signature events and long-standing community partnerships contribute to this mission.
